Memorial Day Picnic at Ralph Newkirk Beach, Petit Jean Mtn.

petit jean picnic 009I was invited to attend a picnic today on Petit Jean Mountain at Pavillion B on Ralph Newkirk Beach. Ralph Newkirk was a brother to my good friend Pearl Newkirk Jones. He was in the army as a medic and died in the WWII. The “beach,” named after Ralph, is really the old swimming hole at the Petit Jean State Park. When I moved to Morrilton 38 years ago there was a white sand beach going down to the water and people swam there. Now the water is not safe to swim, so people fish there. This was a Memorial Day celebration. Everyone brought food and they cooked the meat outside. It was a wonderful evening with good friends and excellent food. Oh, we passed a wreck at Oppelo next to the car wash. That black car really looked messed up.J 1PJ 2PJ 3

I think I remember people swimming there when we first moved to Morrilton in 1978. Is the water polluted? Is Pearl still alive? I was in Adelaide Club with her, and always enjoyed her company.
