This week a friend came over and said he’s found me a new addition to my petit point and needlepoint collection. He found a needlepoint purse with a center of petit point at a sale. These types were made from kits from the 1950’s and 1960’s. You would buy the needlepoint canvas with the floral design stitched on, and the outline of the shape of the purse stitched in black thread. You would choose your background color of thread, and do a basket weave stitch or a Continental stitch background. After the canvas is finished you would send it to a purse maker. You would choose the handle and satin inside fabric. A normal size purse would cost somewhere between $100 and $200 when it was completed. Now at antique stores or flea markets they can sell for as little as the $11.00 this one cost. It’s really a shame they these works of arts from the crafty hands of family members are not kept as family heirlooms from mothers and grandmothers.
