Several people have asked for Mama’s recipes: Fire Crackers, oatmeal Cookies, Bran Muffins, and Divinity

Fire Crackers by Dot Gatling

1 1/3 cup of Canola Oil

2 Tablespoons of Crushed red peppers

1 box of Saltine Crackers (4 sleeves)

(Wheat crackers are also good.)

1 package of Dry Ranch Dressing Mix

Put peppers in oil and soak for an hour.

Put Ranch Mix on top of that, stir.

Put crackers in large airtight container.

(Tupperware works great.)

Pour oil, peppers, and mix on crackers in tub.

Cover tightly with lid. Toss gently different directions every 10 minutes for and hour.

Oil soaks in. No cooking required.

Dot’s Famous Oatmeal Cookies by Dot Gatling

1 1/2 cup flour 1 c. brown sugar firmly packed

1 tsp. salt 2 eggs

1 tsp. soda 1/4 cup milk

1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 3 cups of oats uncooked

1/2 tsp. nutmeg 1 cup raisins

2/3 cup shortening (soft) 1/2 cup white sugar

Optional: Pecans

Mix well. Easier to handle if chilled.

Mama rolled them into rolls and wrapped in wax paper to freeze and slice later.

Bake at 375 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes.

2 1/2 cups sugar 1 heaping cut shortening

4 beaten eggs 1 quart buttermilk

2 cups 100% Bran 2 cups boiling water

2 cups Bran Buds 6 cups flour

5 tsp. soda 2 tsp. salt

Pour boiling water of 100% Bran. Mix shortening, sugar, eggs, buttermilk.

Beat. Add Bran Buds, 100% Bran, flour, soda and salt.

Bake at 400 degrees for 12 minutes.

Batter can be stored in air tight container up to four weeks.

Muffins can be frozen.,

Add nuts and raisins if wanted.

Divinity by Dot Gatling

2 cups of sugar 2 egg whites

1/2 cup of corn syrup 1 t. vanilla

1/2 cup water 1/2 cup pecans

1/4 t. salt

cook syrup until 250 degrees with thermometer.

Pour into beaten egg whites

Add vanilla and nuts.

Pour into pan. If hardens – add a few drops of warm water.
